There's a 20% Chance we're living in the Matrix
Until I talked to Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at Oxford University, it never occurred to me that our universe might be somebody else’s hobby. But if you accept his pretty reasonable assumption, the math and the logic are inexorable once you assume that lots of simulations are being run.

The Complete Ownage of a Woman
I'll try to sum up a funny story that happened a few years ago: I got a vasectomy. I met a girl soon afterwards. She was nice and attractive but with a selfish streak that raised a big red flag. She was 32 at the time and I could practically HEAR her biological clock ticking. Regardless, she was a good lay, easy on the eyes, and reasonably g...

Dear Kevin Rose, Please Create a Photo Section - Sign The Petition
The last few days I’ve noticed a number of photos getting to the front page of Digg. Some are great photos but I’m not sure they’re really front-page worthy, especially when you go to Flickr Explore and find shots that are really amazing. This is not to take anything away from the photographers, but rather a suggestion on how to improve Digg.

HD-DVD key fiasco is an example of 21st century digital revolt
It's the most circulated number of the week. Sixteen hexadecimal digits that unlock the wonder of most currently released HD-DVD titles from the surly clutches of the AACS revenue content protection system. Sixteen digits that have been posted in so many places -- and in many cases, removed only to be reposted -- that they're hard to avoid.

Digg Needs a Picture Section
Lately there have been a good deal of stories reaching the front page that are nothing but pictures (usually ones sported as funny and/or witty). How many other people think pictures deserve their own section, as not to clog up the topics for news articles. Digg this story if you agree.

The CORRECT story about the woman who lost her arms and legs
She did NOT give birth and wake up with no limbs. She contracted Strep A and was given the choice to amputate and live, or keep her limbs and die. Her choice was to amputate. She wants to know HOW she got the strep, but the hospital can't legally release info on who, is anyone, near her had strep. That's where the patient privacy laws come in.

In lieu of an iPhone SDK, we can emulate the interface with JavaScript... this is my one-night proof of concept. If its popular, I'll develop the interface into a class or template. It works best in Safari, of course. Source code is available for download.

Half the electricity in a PC is wasted according to Intel, Google
Roughly 50 percent of the power delivered from a wall socket to a PC never actually performs any work, according to Urs Hölzle, Google fellow and senior vice president of operations. Half the energy gets converted to heat or is dissipated in the AC-to-DC conversion. Around 30 percent of the power delivered to the average server is also lost.
